Want to write a novel this month? Join NANOWRIM!

ATTENTION, EVERYONE! NANOWRIMO IS HERE!

Writing ToolsGreat, now that I have your attention, I would like to take a moment of your time to tell you about the wonders of National Novel Writing Month, or, as it is more affectionately called, NaNoWriMo. The month of November has thehonor of possessing this title. Every year, participants wait with a mixture of anticipation and dread for November 1st to arrive. For the next thirty days they will test their creative limits and create entire worlds separate from their own. Their determination and resolve will be tested, but those who succeed will be rewarded.

Their goal?

Write 50,000 words in one month.

Since November is thirty days long, that means writing approximately 1,666 words a day. As impossible as this may sound, I am here to tell you that it can be done! NaNoWriMo is an experience that I would recommend to anyone and everyone, but especially to those who have even the slightest wisp of an idea for a story. NaNoWriMo might sound like an intimidating challenge, but it is an excellent way to get your ideas on paper.

No one is expected to write the next great American novel. There are no limitations as to what you can or cannot write about, and as long as you write the 50,000 words within the month of November, you have succeeded. If you have multiple ideas for short stories, great, this is your month to write them all down. If you love poetry and want to write a collection of your own works, go for it! Whatever inspires you to be creative, however you express yourself in written word, it is ALL appropriate for NaNoWriMo!1-nanowrimo

But can you win anything for finishing NaNoWriMo?

I am so glad that you asked! When you do succeed, there are various prizes that the NaNoWriMo foundation will offer you, and one of those is a free printed and bound copy of your novel!

This, of course, is only one of the many reasons that one should participate in this magical month of creativity. I participated (and finished it) for the first time last year, and it was one of the coolest things that I have ever done. To any of my fellow writers out there who are struggling with writer’s block, or who can’t find the motivation to sit down and write, this is YOUR month. NaNoWriMo presents you with a challenge that may seem impossible, but once you start writing down your ideas, you will find that you aren’t as blocked as you once thought. I even encourage “non-writers” to give NaNoWriMo a try and see where it might lead!

Everyone has something to say, and even if writing “isn’t your thing,” I would encourage you to put pen to paper and give it a try. There is a creative spirit in all of us, and NaNoWriMo is an opportunity to unlock your own creative potential and allow it to take you somewhere you might never otherwise have imagined.
